AP Biology Summer Work
Summer 2007
Your experience in AP
Biology has begun! It is so exciting that we want to get started right now
instead of waiting 2 ˝ long months.
Here’s what you need
to do:
1. Take the AP Biology Diagnostic Test: Do this without using your text or notes of any kind. I want to get a feeling of your prior biology knowledge. This is on the honor system. The grade you will receive is + (you completed the task) or – (you did not complete the task), so do not cheat it does not benefit you. The score will not affect your grade, but whether you complete it or not will affect your grade.
2. Read Chapter 1:
Pages 1-23
*Textbooks and Web/CDs will be available for checkout from the bookroom
· Create a summary chart of the ten unifying themes of biology. Your chart should include: The name of the theme, a brief description of the theme, a list of concepts you need to study to understand its role in the study of biology
3. Read Chapter 2: Pages 26-38
· Do the chapter Self Quiz pgs. 39-40. You must write the explanation of the answer you choose. If no explanation accompanies the answer choice the question will be marked wrong. The “definition of the term” is not an appropriate explanation.
· Free Response Question: Answer in essay format. Use complete sentences. Answer completely, but the answer should only be about a paragraph.

Define the following terms: atom, isotope, ion. Could a
single particle of matter be all three simultaneously? Explain
4. Read Chapter 3: Pages 41-50
· Do the chapter Self Quiz pgs. 50-51. You must write the explanation of the answer you choose. If no explanation accompanies the answer choice the question will be marked wrong. The “definition of the term” is not an appropriate explanation.
· Free Response Question: Answer in essay format. Use complete sentences. Answer completely, but the answer should only be about a paragraph.

6. Read Chapter 5: Pages 62-84

· Free Response Question: Create a chart of the four classes of organic compounds. Include the following information: type of compound, types/examples, subunits that make up compound.
7. Read Chapter 6: Pages 87-103
· Do the chapter Self Quiz pgs. 104-105. You must write the explanation of the answer you choose. If no explanation accompanies the answer choice the question will be marked wrong. The “definition of the term” is not an appropriate explanation.
· Free Response Question: Answer in essay format. Use complete sentences. Answer completely, but the answer should only be about a paragraph.

What are the three laws of thermodynamics? Discuss their
biological significance. Be sure to include the role of energetics in
enzyme mediated reactions.
8. Register for the AP Biology forum. You will need
to have a valid email address (please use the one you gave me), a screen name (PLEASE
use your first name and last initial. Ex. StaceyR or your full name Ex.
StaceyRader) and you will need to create a password. This will allow
you to access the AP forums. Here is a link to the forum.

website.
9. Post a reply to the "Welcome" thread in the discussion
forum. This will be a "completed"/ "not completed"
score just like the diagnostic test. You need to post by August 25th to receive
credit.
NOTE: There will be an exam on Chapters 2-6 on the first
day of school. It will be approximately 65 questions long.
We will have a summer lecture series on these 5
chapters on:
August 21, 22,
and 23 from 10 am until 12 pm.
Attendance is not mandatory, but recommended. They
will prove helpful, especially if you are having a hard time with the material.
It is assumed you will have read the chapters prior to the start of the
lectures.
